Hi, I'm Diane Moffatt,
My sepsis story started July 8 2016, I was having a ovary removed to check for cancer, surgery was supposed to be 45 mins it took 1.5 hrs, and I had staples which I wasn't supposed to , sent home no explanation just told to come back in a week to have staples removed. I went back to have the staples ,I noticed a smell , I said I have an infection, I work in heathcare so I knew this smell, handed a prescription for antibiotics and sent home. That evening I started to run a fever, hallucinations, struggling to breath, 911 was called, when I arrived I still laid on a stretcher in the hallway for a few hours, when I finally seen a doctor everything went like a whirlwind , blood taken , scans etc. then the doctor did a small debride, of dead flesh, put on strong iv antibiotics and admitted to hospital. About 3 days later I thought I was started to improve, boys was I wrong, a third doctor came in checked some tests and all I can remember is him saying were losing her, call her family, my son was told I died on the table, but I survived.
When I woke the next day I had a 34cm long, 6 cm deep, 6 cm wide open incision across the bottom of my stomach and hooked to a vac machine. One week later I was sent home to heal, with coworkers ( homesupport nurses) coming in every second day to clean, pack , the wound and vac machine. The nurses said it would probably take 8 plus months to heal it took 5 months to close. In the meantime I was having memory issues , like forgetting what I was saying midsentence and how to spell some words , it was so frustrating, I was also told I could start driving again it took me two weeks to get the nerve up to , when I did a shook like crazy, couldn't figure this out , consider im a home support worker and driving is part of my job, this is when I was when I was told I had ptsd. During my healing at home I had to have forms filled out for insurance, I got my hospital reports and this is when I found out what truly happened to me, during the first surgery they nic my bowel, damaged some ligaments, and damaged the femoral in my legs, and the big one I had sepsis. Determine to return to work I spent almost a year in physio trying to get my strength back in my legs , I also no longer have feelings in my bottom stomach, and one side swells up when lifting because the muscles are destroy on that side. I was fortunate enough to work for a company that works with me and my disabilities, I only can work half days now, no long walks, lifting clients or transfers, but Im alive and working , halfway through the day my legs become heavy feeling so I will never returned to fulltime. I joined some fb sepsis groups for support , which helped but realize there was none for Canada so I started Sepsis Survivors Canada PSS support on fb which has helped a lot in my healing mentally, I also am a patient/partner with Canadian Sepsis foundation, determined to get support and knowledge out there for SEPSIS. Its three yrs later , I still tried easily, leg issues , still the odd memory issue and odd ptsd episode come up but Ive come to terms mostly that I will never be the old me again , and help pss survivors as much as I can.
